about

The Euler Variations. A fascinating concept in music creation as it relates to a chessboard, the moving of the Knight to each square on the board one time only, and atonality. Listening will illuminate! Enjoy!

As the artist explains it:

The Knight's Tour is a mathematical problem that has been studied for 1,000 years. Simply stated, the problem is to begin with a single chess knight on an empty board (usually 8x8) and then, following chess rules, move the knight so it visits every square on the board only once.

Leonhard Euler was one of the many mathematicians who studied this fascinating problem that turns out to have connections to Hamiltonian graph theory in addition to providing programming exercises for generations of computer scientists.

The present pieces used a compositional system for pitches using a closed Knight's Tour devised by Euler. (A closed tour is one in which the final position can connect to the beginning one to create a loop.)

For each piece, the notes of a given scale are written onto positions on the board -- repeating and adding rests to fill out the rows and columns as needed. For each voice of a piece, a starting location was chosen by random means plus a direction -- forward or backward -- along the tour.

Each piece was limited to using a single soft synth, sometimes a single preset or designed sound.
The pieces can be taken as explorations into my often uneasy relationship with tonality.
